I like mystery, but too often it is confused with confusing vagueness. * A lot of details of fairy lore just aren’t explained well. But actually, I would love to write like that. My favorite scenes were the ones he was in. He’s complicated, irresistible and surprisingly easy to empathize with. As far as retellings’ versions of fairy godmothers go, he has to be my to be favorite. * Kaisa and Ash’s relationship is adorable. Ash is a living protagonist with real complexities and real struggles that she circumnavigates in a way that any person would be able to relate to.

* Ash goes through a series of subtle changes throughout the story and her views of herself and of the world come through Lo’s writing beautifully. It’s beautiful how Lo composes a fairy tale from a series of realities in human nature. * This book is deep and Lo puts forth some pretty serious reflections on the nature of love and fantasy, and how they relate to life and death. The haunting descriptions and the dangerous nature of the fairies gives it a darker, almost older-feeling, edge. * This world feels like a fairy tale, but in a way that a lot of retellings don’t follow.

When the time comes, Ash must make a choice between Sidhean, to whom she has given herself, and Kaisa, who has taught her how to love. But then Ash meets the King’s Huntress, a woman named Kaisa, who brings color back into her life. When she meets a fairy named Sidhean, she begins a strange friendship with him, pulling further away from reality. Ever since her mother died years ago, she has devoted herself to finding the fairies that her mother would tell her stories about. * When Ash’s father dies, she is left to the care of her stepmother (ARE YOU SURPRISED?) and lives a gloomy and hopeless life as a scullery maid. Published 10/5/10 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readersīuy it: amazon, Barnes & Noble, or ANYWHERE ELSE. Ash was actually published before Huntress, which takes place in the same land, but several centuries earlier. You may remember that I read another one of Malinda Lo’s books, Huntress, a while ago. Ash is a retelling of Cinderella with a few twists: the fairy godmother is a man and her “prince” is a woman. Here’s another stand-alone book, for your reading pleasure.
